Search visibility and machine visibility are becoming different problems

Recent B2B research points to a significant change in how buyers conduct research. G2’s April 2026 research reported that 51% of B2B software buyers now start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google, compared with 29% a year earlier. That creates a different technical layer of discoverability. Traditional search depends heavily on crawling, indexing, relevance and ranking.

A GEO-ready website needs more than well-written copy. Technical foundations include:

  • Crawler access :AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot need deliberate access through robots.txt.
  • Structured data :Organization, Service and FAQ Page schema can provide explicit facts instead of forcing AI systems to infer them from prose.
  • Freshness signals :Accurate dateModified, HTTP Last-Modified headers and XML sitemap lastmod signals help communicate content freshness.
  • Content extractability :Critical information should not exist only inside JavaScript-rendered interfaces, images or infographics. Canonicals and stable URLs also matter for maintaining citation continuity.
  • Observability :Server logs, Search Console, GA4 and AI-visibility monitoring can reveal whether AI systems are actually discovering and citing your content.

This doesn’t make traditional SEO obsolete. It changes the architecture around it. SEO optimizes for retrieval through search indexes. GEO extends that thinking toward retrieval and citation by generative systems. For technical brands, this is becoming an infrastructure question as much as a content question.
